The kids had their doctor appointment today. Everyone is progressing nicely. They got two shots today, and they also had their finger stuck to draw blood to test their Iron levels. They didn't have a good time today at the doctors office. We found out that Adam has an ear infection. He must have had it for a while. He's taking Amoxicillin. You wouldn't even know he had an ear infection since he hasn't been fussy.

Adam has been weaned from his bottle for about 3 weeks. He drinks all his milk from a sippy cup. Kaitlyn will sometimes drink her milk from the sippy cup, while Megan doesn't like the sippy cup as much as her bottle. Over the next 2-3 weeks we are going to try to wean the girls from their bottles.

Kaitlyn had her lower left incisor tooth come in on Wednesday. She didn't do so well with this one. On Thursday morning she had a bunch of ear wax come out, with just a little blood, probably from her scratching at it. We took her in and guess what, she has an ear infection. So she's taking Amoxicillin also. We can never just have one sick, it has to be two or three.

Adam and Kaitlyn went back to the doctor last Tuesday for their follow up exam. Their ear infections are cleared up. However, Adam has a runny nose again, but the doctor says it's not bad enough to cause another ear infection.

The kids aren't quite walking yet on their own. They all can stand by themselves without holding onto anything. Adam and Megan can stand the longest. They do like to stand at the TV and play with the VCR. Sometimes the girls will hold onto Adam for support and walk around him. He doesn't like that very much.

We found out last Wednesday that Adam has another ear infection. He's back on Amoxicillin.

All three kids have reached a major milestone within the last week. Megan was first to take 3 steps last weekend. Adam took about 6 steps last Thursday. Kaitlyn took her first 3 steps today. Megan can now take up to ten steps at a time. She still prefers crawling, but will walk every now and then, especially if you encourage her to walk to you.

We came home today from our New York vacation. We were gone away from the kids for 4 days. When we first got home, the girls took a couple minutes to figure out who we were. They got used to Grandma Shelton, Grandma & Grandpa Severson, and Aunt Sherry watching them. Once they realized who we were, they were excited to see us. Adam was excited as soon as we walked in the door. We had a great time in New York, but we sure missed the kids and it's nice to be home with them.

It's been a long time since we last updated the diary. Last time they were just beginning to take steps, and a week later they were all walking really well. Fortunately, this has not made things more difficult for us since they are restricted to the living room, hallway, and their bedroom. Occasionally, they spend time in the 3 season room.

We just got back from a one week trip with the kids to Dallas. Chris' parents and other relatives live there. It was a 12 hour drive down which included a few stops for the kids. They all traveled really well. We had a TV/VCR in the van which helped a lot. We took the kids to the Ft. Worth zoo one day. They were very good and they really liked seeing the animals - especially the monkeys and ducks. We had our first experience eating at a restaurant in the zoo. This actually went well and the kids were on their best behavior. We ran into a small problem midweek at Chris' parents house. Kaitlyn figured out how to open the doors (the handles pull down rather than turn). Before you knew it, Megan and Adam figured it out too. All they wanted to do for the next few days was open and close the doors. One time we noticed that Kaitlyn had actually shut Megan in a closet. The rest of the trip was really fun. Chris' grandparents and some other relatives got to see the kids for the first time.

We thought we'd jot down a few notes about each of the kids to let you know what they are doing and what their personalities are like:

Adam: He is definitely a momma's boy. He loves to be held and cuddled the most. He is able to find microscopic pieces of lint/crumbs on the floor that no one else seems to notice. He likes to imitate you when you make clicking sounds with your tongue and he will stick his tongue out if you ask him to. He also likes to try and get the door stop out from under their door. We really have to wedge it in there.

Megan: She is definitely a daddy's girl. All of the kids get really excited when daddy gets home from work, but Megan needs a little bit of extra attention from daddy. Megan recently was able to complete a 9 piece puzzle of shapes on her own. She likes to grab a book and put it in your hand to read to her and is able to point out many items in the book. If you ask her what a dog and cow say she will woof (try to woof) and moo. She seems to be a 'mother hen'. If you are showing something to Adam or Kaitlyn, she has to run right over to see what's going on. She likes to climb the most.

Kaitlyn: She is the most independent one of the three. She likes to stack the nesting cups and also work on the puzzles. She likes to walk around with a blanket on her head. Somehow she manages to get around pretty good although she will crash sometimes. She rarely cries when she falls - she's the tough one. Lately, when drinking water from the sippy cup, she will take a mouthful of water and spit it out down her shirt. We've had to change her shirt a couple of times because it gets so wet. Kaitlyn likes to dance.

All 3 of them like to crawl under their cribs and climb on the lowest shelf of their changing table. Adam likes to pull the changing table to the middle of their room. They all like to lay on pillows in the living room on the floor and watch a cartoon or video. Chasing the cat is fun for them although the cat doesn't like it very much. They can all imitate some dance moves from the Wiggles. We've really enjoyed watching them grow, change and develop every day. They are very easy going and really good babies. We're definitely blessed 3 times!!!

The kids had their 15 month doctor appointment today. They got two more shots at this appointment. They will need one more this fall and then won't need any until kindergarten. Everything is going well, the doctor didn't have any concerns, but thought that Kaitlyn needs to be weaned from her pacifier. Adam and Megan suck their thumbs, but there's not much we can do about that at this age.

Adam finally got his first molar last weekend. He has nine teeth now, where the girls have 11 or 12.

July 07, 2002
Megan and Kaitlyn were flower girls and Adam was a ring bearer in their cousin's wedding this weekend. Jamie Deaner, their cousin, married Amanda Roehrich. The kids were pulled down the aisle in an old wooden goat cart. They did very well. We were very relieved that they didn't fuss. The kids had a great time at the reception. They especially loved running around the church and the reception hall. It took several adults to keep track of them. No way could mommy and daddy do it alone! Every once in a while Megan would find her way onto the dance floor where she would dance with everyone. Kaitlyn and Adam enjoyed playing with the wedding favors.

July 27, 2002
It's been awhile since we last updated the diary with how the kids are doing. Over the weekend of July 13th we took the kids camping to Mahoney State Park with a bunch of friends. I wouldn't necessarily call it camping as we stayed in a 4 bedroom deluxe cabin. The kids loved it the same. Once they are older and listen to us, we will try real camping with tents.

The kids have been swimming several times. They love to be in the water. They'll start out splashing and laughing. Adam dipped his own face into the water. He enjoyed it so much it was tough to get him to stop.

The kids are all jibber-jabbering non-stop now. They do say a lot of words we can understand, like: dadda, momma, baby, ball, bye-bye, keekee (kitty cat), cracker, elmo, and others. They don't necessarily fully enunciate, but we know what they are saying. They definitely understand what we are saying, like: it's time for bed, bath time, it's time to eat, who wants to watch a video?, get me the (fill in the blank) book, and others.

They all know how to walk backwards. Megan likes to twirl around in circles. They all like to dance. The girls typically sway and bend at the knee, but Adam gets his whole body and shoulders into it. He's got a little wiggle move that looks like he's break dancing. The boy has rhythm.

In the last couple weeks we have gotten serious about teaching the kids to use their own forks, spoons, plates, and bowls. It is going very well. Except for a couple flipped plates and bowls occasionally. When that happens mommy takes the plates away. The forks aren't the best for spearing food, but they understand what they are meant for.

When the kids need a timeout or need to wind down, they like to watch Dora the Explorer, Blues Clues, Sesame Street, Gullah Gullah Island, and of course the Wiggles and Baby Einstein. But that rarely happens. Well, maybe more than rarely, more like a couple times a day.

It's been a very busy summer for the Seversons. Grandpa and Grandma Severson helped us take the kids to the Iowa State Fair in August. Luckily it was nice and cool, but a little wet. The kids enjoyed looking at the animals, and mom and dad enjoyed the food.

We went to a Triplet's picnic at the end of August. The kids loved running around and playing on the slides. We would love to take them to the park more, but it takes at least 1 adult per child at this age.

We made our second annual trip to St. Louis over Labor Day weekend. Jim, Michelle, and Dottie Beattie were great hosts once again. We visted with some other friends and family, but the girls were teething and very fussy. It didn't make for some pleasant times. They had an elevated temperature and developed a rash from it. We had even taken them to the emergency room while we were there to make sure there wasn't something else wrong. Craig ran in a relay team triathalon with Jim and Corey (team 936). Their main competition was Jim's brother's team, Tom, Mark, and Guy (team 937). Craig ran the 5 mile leg in 47 min. First time he's ran further than from one top of the key to the other (basketball joke). Jim made some fantastic meat on his Big Green Egg.

We've had to clear the living room of furniture, other than a couch and chair. They learned to climb, and love to climb on the couch. Megan went through a biting spell a month ago. She would mostly bite Adam if she was mad at him or he was crowding her. Megan is completely addicted to her blanket. The girls like to pull their pajama tops over their head. Sometimes it gets stuck behind their head. Adam constanly is pointing at things, especially lights and fans, and asking, "what's that?" Of course it doesn't sound exactly like that, but we know what he's saying. If you give him a hug he'll usually pat you on the back. The kids love to read books, and play with their puzzles. They are getting pretty good at eating with spoons.

Last month the kids had their 18 month doctor appointment. Everything looks great, there weren't any shots. I think Adam thought there was going to be shots because he was a little upset when the doctor was examining him.

We have been taking the kids to Kindermusik class on Tuesday nights. There are about 15 kids in the class ranging in age from 18 months to 3 years. Our kids have a ton of fun running around, playing with instruments, and dancing. Chris's sister Jenny is helping us, so that we have one adult per child.

The kids seem to be growing up so fast. They surprise us all the time with things they do and say.

Adam is the neatest eater of the three. He is very good with his spoon, and really makes an effort not to be sloppy with the spoon. Unlike the girls who scoop up too much food and wind up with half of the food around their mouth rather than in their mouth. The kids are really good at knowing their shapes. They even know the difference between squares and rectangles and circles and ovals. Craig didn't even know that until Geometry class in 10th grade. They are starting to say their ABC's. Megan can say it up to the letter G. They are also starting to learn numbers. Adam can point out the numbers 1 or 2 or 3. Kaitlyn seems to be the singer of the three. She sings a lot, like "D-D-D-D-Da-Dora" and "Row, Row, Row." They are starting to play together more. They'll laugh at each other if they are playing peek-a-boo. They'll chase each other down the hall. They also like to imitate each other, which sometimes can be annoying when they start banging their cups on their trays, or start throwing their food on the floor. Adam is scared to death of elevators. He starts crying as soon as one is in view. Megan likes to giggle and run away from mommy and hide under her crib. She thinks she's being sneaky. When Kaitlyn wakes up from her naps, she likes to toss her binky into the crib, and say "bye-bye, binky." She then likes to run down the hall and wake up her brother and sister.

November 07, 2002
Last week was Halloween. We took the kids to the mall for trick or treating like we did last year. They followed their cousin Nicholas around. Megan was Dora the Explorer, Kaitlyn was Blue from Blue's Clues, and Adam was Woody from Toy Story. We got home in time for trick or treaters in our neighborhood. The kids enjoyed seeing all the kids come to the door. They would run to the door and stare. Megan kept saying, "more kids." She's been saying "more, more" lately.

We've had a major turning point in the saftey of the house. All three kids can climb on the beds. Kaitlyn and Adam were the first, but it wasn't long before Megan saw them and learned how. And when they are all three up there it's a strong possibility that someone might get pushed off, bounced off, or will bump heads. We removed the bed frame in the first bedroom, and now the bed is on the floor. At least now they won't have far to fall. We'd close the door, but Adam has learned to turn the door knobs. Luckily, they haven't figured out how to climb out of the crib yet.

They are getting better at not taking toys or books away from each other. I think they understand when we say they have to take turns.

Megan is becoming quite the motherly type. She'll tell Adam and Kaitlyn, "no, no, no" if they are doing something they aren't supposed to do. She likes to give her toy dog and doll a drink of water when she gets one. She'll clean her dog's face with a wipe. And she likes to give her doll hugs and kisses.

Kaitlyn will fake sneeze if she hears someone else sneeze. She likes to wear mommy's shoes and can walk pretty good in them.

Adam is now able to point out each letter of the alphabet as you ask him a letter.

Now that the kids are talking more, whenever daddy comes home they like to scream and yell "hi daddy." Then it's "daddy, daddy, daddy" while they follow daddy around for the next hour.

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had happy holidays. It's been a very busy couple of months. Chris's sister Stephanie, and her parents visited us over Thanksgiving. Stephanie gave the kids their first haircut and style. Although they were well behaved, they weren't very generous with their tip. Maybe that's why Stephanie cuts grown up's hair and doesn't usually cut kids's hair.

December was a busy month for us getting ready for Christmas and Santa. Speaking of Santa, we took the kids to see Santa for the first time. We first had to wait about 15 minutes for Santa to arrive, felt like 2 hours though. Once we got up to Santa, the kids did not want to see him. The crying was our first clue. We decided to go ahead with the pictures so the kids could look back and see what cry babies they were. We wanted 4 photos, one for each kid and one for Grandma Shelton. Things turned from bad to worse when they ran out of film after the first photo. It felt like an eternity before they got the new film ready. Let's hope next year goes smoother.

We put the Christmas tree up this year. They kids were pretty good about staying out of it. Every morning they would point to the top and say "star." Chris's parents came back for Christmas. We also visited Craig's parents Christmas day. The kids were interested in helping open the first couple presents, but then wanted to spend their time playing with the toys, rather than opening more presents. We could have gotten away with only one present had we known.

The kids all know their alphabet now and can say and recognize all the letters. They can also count and recognize numbers from 1-10. They are still working on better pronunciations, but we can tell what they are saying. They LOVE to read Dr. Seuss's ABC book and play with their letter cards. They know their shapes and a lot of different animals and animal sounds. They are still working on their colors.

They like to sing and dance and play ring around the rosey. They like to chase each other and then tackle one another. They'll roll around on each other, laughing and giggling. It's cute, but we're trying to teach them not to push each other. The girls like to hold hands and walk around the house. In November, they started climbing into their highchairs. However, we've just recently switched them to booster seats so they can eat at the table. It's given us room back in the kitchen. They are into imitating us. They will fake snore, cough, and sneeze. We have to really watch what we do or say now.

Megan has become somewhat interested in the whole potty, bathroom thing. She sometimes lets us know if she has to "poo-poo." She understands that she gets a clean diaper after she poops. Chris was showing Megan the potty chair before Christmas and Megan actually peed on it once. We haven't gone full force into potty training, and Megan has lost interest in the potty chair. We'll probably try again when they get closer to two. We'll probably start with Megan, since Kaitlyn and Adam haven't shown any interest at all.

March 10, 2003
We haven't started potty training yet. We are getting closer with the girls. They keep asking to use it, and they will sit on it, but they won't do anything. Adam has no clue about the potty - he's just not interested.

The kids have been in Gymboree class for over a month. They are in the GymRunners class for 18-24 month olds. They have an absolute blast in the class. They are very outgoing and play very well with other kids. They love the slides and bubbles.

Since we last updated the website, the kids have officially dropped their morning nap and are taking about a 2 - 2.5 hour afternoon nap starting at 1pm. They go to bed about 8 at night and wake up by 7am.

The kids love things in the sky. Adam is an airplane freak. He can spot them from miles away, and even knows that it's an airplane when all he sees is the vapor trail. All three kids must look out the window before bed to see if the moon and stars are out. Or as they like to put it, "little star" as in Twinkle Twinkle. They get excited when they see the moon.

Watching Dora has paid off. The kids can all count to ten in Spanish. And they can all count backwards from 10 to 1, but you have to get them started.

They love to color with crayons. The first few times we spent most of the time trying to keep them from eating the crayons. They almost like it more when we draw for them. We put out a bed sheet to protect the floor. We tried coloring on the table, but they colored more of the table than the paper.

We braved taking the kids out to eat a week ago. It was Dave Daniel's birthday and his family was taking him to Happy Joe's, his favorite pizza place. The Orwig's and Water's families went also. The kids enjoyed climbing on the Skeeball games. They behaved surprisingly well. The only problem we encountered was when we were leaving. We lost track of Megan briefly, but we found her back climbing on the Skeeball game. Once a year eating out is good enough.

March 16, 2003
The kids turned 2 today. We had an uneventful birthday compared to their first birthday. We just celebrated with family this time. They received a ton of toys and clothes.

Their 2 year doctor visit went very well. Everyone is right on track and doing great.
